A Tokyo metropolitan government official, recommending measures to take after a spate of fatal incidents of children falling from balconies across Japan.
A special feature of this year’s event: get interviewed on the spot and possibly get a job in one day!
This isn’t enough. This is happening so often that it is obviously a systemic issue with apartment design, which can’t be solved by just telling parents to never take their eyes off their kids even in their own home because it is a death trap.
At a minimum windows in these damn highrises should be required to come equipped with effective child locks that can’t easily be opened by any 2 year old (which is what most have now). And they should be banned from locating AC units right next to railings on balconies.
The Japan Ad Council should have TV PSA’s reiterating those points. Perhaps apt buildings taller than 2 or 3 floors should require posters in the lobbies, elevators, or common areas. Maybe require a pamphlet on child safety with new apt rentals/purchases.
All simple, low-cost methods that may save a life or two.
Of course the “checking and improving the balcony area” is directed to the companies that design and construct the buildings, right? There would be no point in shifting the blame to parents that can only afford to live on apartments that are for practical purposes death traps for small kids. Telling them to correct this systematic problem (for free) would be much more productive than telling parents not to lose sight of their kids for even a moment.
Lip-service. They will “check” and say it’s fine. Then more kids will fall to their deaths.
Japan just doesn’t care. Many aspects of their culture are disgusting. Just like the dragon and demon “festivals” all across Japan, where actors dress up as “dragons and demons” and terrorize and scare the children during the festival in the name of “culture”. I don’t sign up for this type of behavior anywhere. Time to become adults Japan. MacCarthy labeled you 72 or so years ago because of this equivalent demonic streak in your “culture”. Like Japan is a “Lord of the Flies” wonderland.
Kinda sad when the gov’t has to tell grown people how to safely raise their kids.
Nobody ever has to tell my wife and I to do such common sense things.
@kyushubill Says who and when? You are told everyday whether you like it or not.

One should never leave a child alone in any place at any time.
Lots of men here who are not primary carers of small children. You cant stare at kids 24 hours a day. There needs to be better child locks which make balconies off limits to children.
